READING AT HOME

Children are usually excited to listen to stories. If they don’t, surely the colour and drawing of a storybook would pique their attention and interest.

In general, parents and teachers agree that every child should learn to read their own books, so that they would reap the benefits of reading.

However, a child must first cultivate the interest to read with parents at home. When this interest starts to grow in a child, you can move on to improve their literacy skills and knowledge in other subjects.

1. Literacy

Reading is a fun way to teach basic understanding, listening, reading and writing skills. Once your child knows the sound(s) of each letter, blending(or connecting sounds together) will enable them to progress into an early reader.

Besides that, there are many literacy activities that can be carried out at home – talking about the story, drawing a scene from the storybook, forming your own 3 letter word, or even asking children to write about what will happen to the storybook character later on. These activities cultivate interest in reading.

2. Other knowledge

Books are useful for introducing new topics to your child, although they may come with difficult words.

Example of topics include numbers (math), solar system (science), kindness (character building), pollution and climate change (general knowledge).

Exposing your child to different topics enable them to ask questions and marvel at amazing things -and they might even pick up new words and expand their vocabulary!

In short, interest in reading is the key to your child’s lifelong learning. When your child is able to read by themselves, they will later on learn about knowledge that could not obtained from classrooms. Remember to spend time to read with them as much as you can!
